Offer Description
University Rennes 2 is the host institution of the ERC project "STAGE: From Stage to Data, the Digital Turn of Contemporary Performing Arts Historiography", winner of the ERC advanced 2022 call. STAGE proposes an innovative theoretical and methodological framework merging culture analytics, actor-network theory, data modeling, and computer vision to challenge conventional approaches to the paradigm shift of digital traces in performing arts studies. At the intersection of history, epistemology, and digital humanities, STAGE’s key goal is to move performing arts studies into a digital context to establish a new historiography of mise en scène and creative processes in Europe since WWII.
Reporting to the ERC STAGE project manager, Ms Clarisse Bardiot, professor in performing art studies, the data engineer will be responsible for implementing the project's Data Management Plan (DMP), collecting data and making it available (in line with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles), as part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, engineers and developers. He/she will work closely with libraries, archives and performing arts companies.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
1. data collection
- Identify and collect data relevant to the project
- Establish automated data collection processes from various sources
- Participate in archive digitization and OCR projects
- Contribute to establishing the performing arts ontology and defining the data model for the project.
2.data processing
- Enrich and encode data and metadata according to the established data model.
- Clean, pre-process and structure data to make it usable (corpus alignment, network visualization, metadata...)
- Ensure data interoperability with other systems
- Develop scripts and data transformation tools
- Propose IT solutions and ad hoc developments (in particular for the software for the study of creative processes also developed as part of the project”).
3. security and confidentiality
- Guarantee the security and confidentiality of the collected and processed data, in compliance with current ethical standards.
- Implement and manage the various procedures related to ethical data collection issues.
4.documentation
- Define and monitor the DMP in compliance with FAIR principles
- Document project data, tools and procedures, write data papers
- Technical watch on data processing technologies
- Documentary watch on performing arts and digital humanities

5.communication
- Contribute to the project research blog
- Manage and update the project website
6 Collaboration
- Participate in team meetings and discussions to develop project solutions
- Support researchers (from PhD students to senior researchers) and students in the use of data
- Participate in the scientific life of the team: training courses, seminars and workshops.

Technical and professional skills
- Solid experience in data engineering, data collection, processing and management
- Knowledge of digital standards, formats and protocols for data interoperability and open science, including FAIR principles
- Knowledge of digital humanities
- Familiarity with ontologies, in particular CIDOC-CRM, and repositories
- Knowledge of data processing languages (SQL, XML, RDF, SPARQL) and regular expressions
- Familiarity with huma-num tools
- Interest in theatre studies, heritage or art history
- Ability to work as part of a team. Excellent communication skills
- Strong organizational skills, autonomy and initiative
- Ability to produce reports for reporting purposes, as well as to conduct a documentary and technological watch.
- Very good level of French and English (oral and written)
Other knowledge: digital archive editing, data visualization, natural language processing, programming language (Python), bibliographic and archival description, documentary indexing, knowledge of OCR and HTR software.
We are looking for a person with higher education (Engineer, Master, or equivalent), in computer science, library science, or digital humanities. Previous knowledge of theater studies, or art history, Linked Open Data.

Additional Information
Fixed-term contract (CDD) for 1 year, renewable for a further 4 years
Remuneration: according to the Research Engineer grid and experience
